What Do We Do? ¿Que Hacemos?

We had our first "first time parents" scare. The sitter called to tell us that Lilly's temperature was skyrocketing. We were totally freaked out. Rene and I both rushed home from work and took her straight to the doctor. There must be some parental trigger that goes off at the thought of your child being hurt or sick. Instantly, the rest of the world fades away and becomes meaningless. The doctor said that she had a viral infection and that the fever was a sign of her body fighting it. We took her home and gave her Motrin and lots of snuggles.

Tuvimos nuestro primer susto como padres nuevos. La señora que nos quida a Lilly en el día nos llamo para decirnos que la niña tenía una fiebre bien alta. Nos dio pánico. Rene y yo salimos corriendo del trabajo para recojerla y llevarla al doctor. Tiene que haber una señal en el cerebro de los padres que te domina al saber que tu hijo(a) puede estar enfermo o lastimado. En tan solo un instante todo el resto del mundo se desapareció y ya no te importa nada mas que tu criatura. El doctor dijo que tenía un infección viral, y que su fiebre era una señal que su cuerpo estaba batallando la infección. La llevamos a casa y le dimos un poco de Motrin, y muchos cariñitos.

But the fever got worse. We called the Kaiser on-call nurse and she said that all we could do was try to keep the fever down. The next morning she broke out in a rash. Oh shit, we thought. Rene took her back to the doctor and we found out that she had Roseola, not the Measles. Whew! She is fine now and was a pretty good sport about the whole thing.

Pero su fiebre se puso peor. Le llamamos a la enfermera del hospital de la niña y nos dijo que lo único que podíamos hacer es tratar de mantenerle baja la fiebre. La próxima mañana, amanecio con sarpullido. Mierda! Rene la llevo de regreso al doctor y nos dijo que tenía Roseola, pensabamos que le habia dado sarampion. Que gran alivio. Ya mejoró y se porto muy bien durante su primer enfermeda.

My advice to new parents is to beware of websites that are run by crazy people. In our online attempts to figure out what was wrong with her we ran into some outrageous forms of bad advice. Make sure the websites are reputable. Don't listen to the blogs! Although you should listen to mine because I know what I'm talkin' about now. Just kidding.

Mi consejo para los padres es que tengan cuidado cuando buscan algo en el internet, algunas paginas las publican gente que esta loca. En nuestra busqueda para saber lo que le pasaba a la niña, nos encontramos unas paginas con consejos muy arriesgados y dañinos. Estén seguros que la pagina de la red es acreditada. No les hagan caso a los blogs. Aunque, si deben de confiar en mis consejos, porque hoy si se de lo que estoy hablando. Bueno, ni tanto, son bromas.
