It is a tradition to make and decorate the birthday cakes in a fancy schmancy fashion. So that is what I did. I put on the hat of baker extraordinaire and made a tiara cake. It was pretty fun and much, much easier than I would have thought (especially since Beverly helped out on the lettering). Although, ask my mom about the bear cake incident. It is not such a success story. You win some and you lose some. I guess cakes don't fair well in the humidity in south east Texas, even if they did take all night to make.

Es tradición para mi familia hacer el pastel de cumpleaños y decorarlo de una manera extravagante, nunca se compran. Así que precisamente eso hice. Me puse mi gorro de chef, y le hice su pastel. El pastel de Lilly era en forma de tiara, con anillos de fantasía como las joyas de la corona. Fue divertido y mucho menos trabajo de lo que pensé (especialmente porque mi amiga Beverly me ayudó con deletrearlo). Aunque, si tienen oportunidad, pregúntenle a mi mamá sobre el incidente del pastel de osito. No es una historia exitosa. A veces se gana, a veces se pierde. Supongo que los pasteles no duran en el sur de Tejas, donde hay mucha humedad en el clima y se derriten rápido. Aunque la pobre pasó toda la noche cocinándolo.

Thank goodness for the digital age. We were not at Easter but several wonderful people have emailed us pictures of the event. Poof, bam! I was then able to add them to the blog in about 5 minutes. Now they are here for our viewing pleasure. Magically, it is like we were actually there.

Gracias a dios que estamos en la época digital. No asistimos la celebración de pascua pero varias personas muy lindas nos han mandado fotos por correo electrónico. ¡Zas! Las pude incluir en el blog en como 5 minutos. Ahora las tenemos para mirarlas con gusto. Como magia, es como que si estuvimos allí.

The Artful Dodgers

We got brave and took Lilly to her first MLB game. Dodgers vs those rascally Giants. We thought the trip was going to be a bust considering Lilly was a complete squirrel in the pregame time. But, she trooped it out and made it all the way through to the 7th inning when I decided it was time to go home. The game had been a snoozefest (with the exception of a near fight with an ump) up until that point so I thought it would have been an appropriate time to beat the crowds. To daddy's dismay, the Dodgers tied 2 to 2 and then went on to beat the Giants by 1. Dagnabit! We missed the most exciting part. That's okay though, there are a few games left in the season.


Nos animamos para llevar a Lilly a su primer partido de Béisbol. Los Dodgers contra los Gigantes. Creímos que iba ser un desastre nuestra excursión, porque Lilly estaba inquieta antes que empezó el partido. Pero se comporto mucho mas de lo que esperaba, hasta la séptima entrada, cuando decidí que era tiempo de irnos. El partido estuvo aburrido, sin mucha acción mas que una un jugador que casi se pelea con uno de los árbitros. Pensé que fuera bueno irnos un poquito temprano para no batallar con toda la mara para salir del parqueo, ese tráfico se pone terrible. Para su gran disgusto, papá aprendió después que los Dodgers ¡empataron a los Gigantes, 2 a 2, y finalmente ganaron por un punto! Que jodida... nos perdimos la parte mas emocionante del partido. Pero no le hace, hay unos cuantos partidos mas antes que termine temporada de béisbol.

Easter

Lilly spent Easter with Rene's family. She had a blast! Rene and I went to Catalina for few days. The weather was phenomenal! It is the perfect time of year to go. Not too crowded, not too hot. The first night we stayed at the Zane Gray Pueblo Hotel. Zane Gray was an author who built a pueblo villa on Catalina because he loved deep sea fishing. He is the reason that the buffaloes are there. They were brought over during the movie filming of one of his novels, The Vanishing American. The villa has been transformed into the hotel. Each one of the rooms is named after one of his novels. It was pretty sweet. It was out of the way in all of the good ways. They don't have TVs or phones but they do have gorgeous sun decks and lanais at every turn. Typically you would get one of your best night's sleep there. However, one of the other hotels caught on fire an we listened to firefighters sawing through the roof of the hotel ALL night long. The second night we stayed in town. Whoa Nelly! We had a completely different experience. We were close to everything. And by everything, I include the honeymoon/Viagra/Spanish fly/oyster bar couple that was in the room above us. We didn't sleep that night either. All in all, it was a great trip though. If you haven't been in a while, it is worth it. There are a ton of activities and things to see. Fantastic food and family friendly (except for the Zane Gray. "They appreciate their silence and hope that you respect that.")

Pascua

Lilly paso el día de Pascua con la familia de René. ¡Se divirtió mucho! René y yo fuimos a la isla de Catalina un par de días. El clima estuvo fenomenal. Es la temporada perfecta para ir a Catalina. No hay mucha gente y no hace mucho calor. La primera noche nos quedamos en el hotel Zane Gray Pueblo. Zane Gray fue un autor quien abrió un hotel estilo villa en Catalina porque le encantaba pescar en aguas profundas. Por el es que se encuentran búfalos en esta área. Los trajeron para filmar una película que fue basada en uno de sus obras, The Vanishing American. La villa original fue transformada en un hotel. A cada recámara de el hotel le han puesto el nombre de una de sus obras. Estuvo bien chivo. Quedaba retirado, pero en buena forma. No tiene televisiones, ni teléfonos pero si tienen muchas terrazas y verandas. Normalmente se puede dormir bien rico en estas recámaras. Pero, resulta que un hotel que queda a la par ¡se encendió! en nuestra primer noche, y los bomberos pasaron toda la noche serrando el techo del hotel. La próxima noche la pasamos en la cuidad. ¡Púchica, que gran diferencia! Estábamos bien cerca de todo, es decir, a la pareja con Viagra/bar de ostras/Spanish Fly (un afrodisiaco para mujeres) quienes se quedaron en el cuarto directamente arriba del de nosotros. No alcanzamos dormir nada esta noche tampoco. En total, tuvimos una excursión muy divertida. Si tienen mucho tiempo de no ir a Catalina, vale la pena. Hay muchas cosas que hacer y ver. Es buen lugar para familias y tiene restaurantes riquísimos. Salvo el lugar de Zane Gray quienes "valoran el silencio y esperan que todos lo observan"
